McBride and Maier Tabbed Harold Hofman Memorial Scholarship Recipients

In order to participate for Viking Athletics, you must possess the right blend of qualities that focus on the morals set forth by great coaches and educators. The fundamentals of education can sometimes be lost in the rigorous demands of an athletic schedule. However, as a student-athlete, you must learn to balance those demands to better your future and, for most all student-athletes at the community college level, transfer to a four-year university and obtain a degree.

Every year, a male and female athlete are awarded the Harold Hofman Memorial Scholarship for outstanding work in the classroom and on the field. After much consideration, freshman Mary McBride of the women's volleyball team and freshman Jake Maier of the football team have been awarded the scholarship this year for tireless work in the classroom and on their respected playing field.

McBride was a staple for the Viking volleyball team that reached the second round of playoffs and ended the season ranked 16th in the state. McBride was named to the South Coast Conference (SCC) – South first team list. She was the oil that ran the offensive machine, as she recoded 40+ assists in 11 contests while successfully recording 10 or more assists in every game. She earned a 10.27 assists-per-set mark that ranked tops in the SCC-South.

Maier acted as the most potent offensive threat in the Southern California Football Association (SCFA)'s Central Division by leading the Vikings to a 9-2 overall record while ranked fifth in the state at the conclusion of the season. Maier was named the SCFA Central Division Offensive Player of the Year after pacing the league in yards-per-game (335.4) and touchdowns (38). He capped off his season with a total of 3,689 passing yards which included an 8.7 yards-per-attempt mark. Additionally, Maier was named the 2016 Western State Bowl Most Valuable Player (MVP) after throwing a career-high six touchdowns in a 47-41 win over Bakersfield. He was also named SCFA Player of the Week three times during the season.

McBride and Maier will be honored at the 2017 Century Club Banquet on Monday, January 30 for receiving this prestigious award.
