Barnes Named Director of Basketball Operations

Long Beach, Calif. - After serving one year in an interim role, Barry Barnes was named the permanent Director of Basketball Operations, announced Wednesday.

"We are really excited for this opportunity for Barry and look forward to seeing the amazing things he will achieve in this permanent role," LBCC Athletic Director Randy Totorp said. "Barry is an LBCC alum and has a great pulse on the community. He has a proven track record of success on the court, as well as continues to successfully matriculate student-athletes each year."

Barnes will enter his 13th season as head coach of the men's basketball program at Long Beach City College, boasting a career record of 74-42 (.638) in the South Coast Conference and 171-134 (.561) overall.

"I am so thankful and very excited for this opportunity," Barnes said. "I am looking forward to continuing this journey in my career."

He led the Vikings to back-to-back SCC Championships in 2014 and 2015, earning SCC Coach of the Year honors at the conclusion of the 2014-15 season. He added another conference championship in 2019 with COY honors with the team advancing to the Southern California Regional Championships - one game shy of the state tournament.

Prior to taking over the program in 2009, Barnes served as an assistant coach under Gary Anderson for six seasons. During that time, he helped lead the Vikings to three consecutive SCC South Division Championships (2005-07), as well as an Elite 8 appearance in 2006.

Barnes began his coaching career as head junior varsity coach and assistant varsity coach at Lakewood High School in 1989. He then transitioned to the collegiate level, serving as assistant coach for the men's basketball program at California State University, Dominguez Hills from 2000-04.

As a player, Barnes played two seasons at LBCC (1982-84), earning All-Metro Honorable Mention honors. He then transferred to Biola University, collecting honors such as being selected to the All-Tournament Team at the Point Loma Classic, NAIA District III All-State Tournament Team, and NCCAA All-America Second Team.

Barnes earned his bachelor's in physical education, teaching from CSUDH followed by a master's in physical education from Azusa Pacific University.
