Baseball: Long Beach pushes win streak to six after 3-1 win over LA Harbor

The Long Beach City College baseball team rolled to a 3-1 South Coast Conference win over visiting Los Angeles Harbor College on Thursday at Joe Hicks Memorial Field. The win extended LBCC's winning streak to six games as the Vikings, now 10-7 overall and 5-0 in the SCC, will look for the three-game series sweep on Saturday (Mar 17) at noon back at LA Harbor.

Freshman left-hander Jake Angus (Pacifica HS, pictured) put together another impressive outing by a LBCC starting pitcher. He tossed seven innings, allowing just one run and four hits to improve to 2-2 overall this season.

Harbor (6-9, 2-3 SCC) got to Angus early, posting its lone run in the top of the second.

With one out, Kris Cayton was hit by a pitch and with two outs, stole second base. Jackson Morrow drew a walk before Anthony Canjura lined a single to center to drive in Cayton. Canjura was able to advance to second on a throw to the plate to give the Seahawks runners on second and third with two outs. But Angus struck out Nolan Sax to end the inning.

Long Beach got that run back in the bottom of the second. Freshman Chris Miranda (Bellflower HS) singled to left and promptly stole second. Harbor starting pitcher James Glawe struck out freshman Manny De La Rosa (St. John Bosco HS) and got freshman Devan Schermerhorn (Mayfair HS) to fly out. Glawe appeared to get out of the inning, but a grounder to short by freshman Jaime Valle (Paramount HS) was booted Canjura for an error which allowed Miranda to score all the way from second base.

Angus had to pitch his way out of another jam in the third. Kyle Demarco led off with a single and Austin Chavira followed with a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. Angus settled down and got Michael Encinas to line out to third, struck out Martin Lemus, and induced a ground out to first from Cayton to escape unharmed.

Long Beach pulled ahead for good in the fifth. With one out, Schermerhorn and Valle hit back-to-back singles before freshman Avery Flores (Millikan HS) lined a single to center to bring in Schermerhorn.

A ground out by sophomore Daniel Catalan (Warren HS) put runners on second and third with two outs. But another two-out error allowed a run to score as Morrow's pickoff attempt from behind the plate at third base hit Valle and dribbled in to left field to allow him to come in to score.

From that point, the LBCC pitching was dominant. Angus retired six of the final seven batters he faced, sophomore Danny Ittner (Lakewood HS) struck out two in a scoreless eighth inning, and sophomore Edwin Santiago (Jordan HS) retired the Seahawks in order in the ninth for his third save.

Glawe (1-2) took the loss for Harbor after allowing three runs (one earned) and five hits over seven innings. Chavira went 2 for 3 to lead Harbor at the plate.
