Viking Baseball Blanked by IVC, but Win Series

The No. 15 Long Beach City College baseball team were seeking a series-sweep against the Irvine Valley College Lasers on Tuesday afternoon as they played host to the Lasers in the final game of a three-game series. Despite putting up a total of 18 runs throw the first two games, the Vikings were blanked en route to a 5-0 defeat.

Freshman hurler Jacob Gregg was tossed the pearl for the start and pitched effectively through six innings while allowing just one earned run and fanning three batters.

Gregg shimmied out of numerous jams, highlighted by the top of the second inning were he recorded two quick outs, but then surrendered two base hits. Nevertheless, Gregg gritted his teeth and got out of the inning with a strikeout to preserve the scoreless tie at the time.

He worked his way out of a jam two frames later after forcing the Laser to strand a runner on third base by forcing an inning-ending pop out to freshman catcher Robert Barham (Long Beach, CA).

A four-run top of the fourth inning by the Lasers put the dagger in Long Beach's side en route to the defeat.

LBCC only recorded six hits, but sophomore designated hitter Jared Mayeda (Cypress, CA) barred three of them as he finished the day going a perfect 3-for-3. No hits went for extra bases as well.

Freshman reliever Angel Delgadillo (Lakewood, CA) was effective out of the bullpen by chucking 1.1 innings and allowing just two hits.

The Vikings (2-1) will continue play on the road
