The Long Beach City college baseball team traveled to San Diego, CA this past Friday to face off against San Diego City College at Morley Field. The Vikings rode strong pitching and late-game hitting en route to a 5-0 victory.

Freshman pitcher Josh Agnew (Long Beach, CA) was awarded the start for the Vikings and performed extremely well once again. After earning his first-career victory against Irvine Valley, Agnew continued to work well off the bump by going 7.1 innings and fanning six batters.

Agnew never faced any serious harm in the contest, as he was poised and consistent throughout the entirety of his start. He finished off his last full frame by retiring the side.

The Vikings were shy with the bats in the first six frames, but they broke out of their shell in the top of the seventh inning by etching a four-spot on the scoreboard.

After a quick out in the top of the seventh inning, sophomore first baseman Vincent Byrd II (Sacramento, CA) led off the rally with a walk. Freshman right fielder Val Stammler (Long Beach, CA) followed by singling through the left side. Sophomore designated hitter Jared Mayeda (Cypress, CA) continued his hot hitting by squaring up a single through the middle, scoring Byrd.

The Vikings worked the bases loaded shortly after the Mayeda single and Vikings plated two more runs. Sophomore catcher Jacob Gotta (San Diego, CA) wore a pitch to force home a run and freshman center fielder Ian Konek (Long Beach, CA) singling to center field to grab a 4-0 lead.

Freshman third baseman Reese Berberet (Fallbrook, CA) kept the bats going for Long Beach in the top of the fifth inning by muscling up and parking a leadoff homerun over the left field wall, expanding the LBCC lead to 5-0.

Five runs was all the Vikings needed, as freshman reliever Jacob Alcorn and freshman reliever Angel Delgadillo came in to close out the contest by allowing a combined one hit en route to the victory.

Delgadillo earned the save after throwing 0.2 innings, while Agnew earned his second-consecutive victory on the bump.

Konek was responsible for two RBI by finishing the day going 1-for-3 at the dish. Berberet went 2-for-4 with a round-tripper.

The Vikings (4-1) will return home on Tuesday, February 7 to take on West L.A. for the second time this month. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
