It was a classic pitchers duel on Tuesday evening as a conference contest between the No. 18 Long Beach City College Vikings and the EC-Compton Center College Tartars featured just a combined 10 hits and one run. Fortunately, the Vikings were responsible for the lone run as they etched the run in the first frame and piggybacked off a masterful pitching performance from freshman starter Jacob Gregg (Long Beach, CA) en route to a 1-0 edge over the Tartars.

The Tartars never seriously threatened through Gregg's eight innings of work. A nearly flawless defensive unit behind the freshman hurler helped carry him to his second victory of the season. He utilized his entire realm of pitches to keep EC-Compton off balance en route to three strikeouts – just one and a half strikeouts below his 4.41 strikeouts-per-inning mark on the season.

Long Beach scored its one and only run in the bottom of the first inning as sophomore designated hitter Jared Mayeda (Cypress, CA) cashed in at the plate with a bases-loaded single to left field.

Freshman closer Chase Ambrose (Long Beach, CA) entered into the game in bottom of the ninth inning with a save opportunity. Despite finding himself with runners on first and third with one out, he promptly forced a game-ending double play en route to the 1-0 win.

Gregg (2-3) picked up his second win of the year, while Ambrose earned his fourth save of the season after blowing a save in his previous outing.

The Vikings (23-13-1, 12-5) will hit the road on Thursday, April 20th to face off against the Tartars (7-15, 1-7) for the second game of the three-game series. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
