Baseball Falls to Southwestern on Home Turf

The Long Beach City College baseball team fell to the Southwestern College Jaguars 2-11 on Saturday afternoon at the Joe Hicks Field. With the loss, the Vikings drop to 8-6 overall.

Freshman pitcher Benji Gonzalez (1-1) took his first loss of the season with two hits on two runs, one earned, while striking out one in 1.2 innings of work. Starting freshman pitcher Michael Ramirez struck out three in the first five innings.

The Jaguars were first to get on the board with a RBI double in the top of the third. The Vikings answered back with a sacrifice fly from sophomore center fielder Aaron Fawcett to bat in sophomore left fielder Robert Funk.

Southwestern College added to the board again in the top of the seventh with a single to left field for 2 RBI. In the bottom of the seventh, freshman shortstop David Rivera led off with a triple and was batted in by Funk with a sacrifice fly for the Vikings' second run.

The Jaguars weren't finished yet and scored six runs in the eighth inning and two more in the ninth to finish the game with an 11-2 win.

The Vikings will play again at home on Wed. Feb. 28 against Glendale College.
