The Long Beach City College baseball team defeated the LA Harbor College Seahawks 8-1 in game one of the three-game conference series. With the win, the Vikings advance to 20-18 and 11-9 in the South Coast-South Conference.

Freshman pitcher Garrett Rennie closed out the game with his sixth win with only allowing two hits to the Seahawks, while striking out six in 4.2 innings of work.

The Vikings made their mark in the third inning and held on the entire game. Sophomore third baseman Reese Berberet and freshman catcher David Balboa both got on base with back-to-back singles. Berberet was brought in by sophomore right fielder Robert Funk for the Vikings' first run. Then freshman second baseman Raul Gonzalez hit an RBI single to bring in sophomore center fielder Val Stammler.

Sophomore designated hitter Aaron Fawcett was next at-bat with a fielder's choice, and Funk sprinted into home from third for the Vikings' next run. Freshman shortstop David Rivera then smashed a double to bring in Fawcett and Gonzalez to close out the inning with five runs on five hits.

The Seahawks scored on sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth, but the Vikings put a stop to their offense before they could add any more to the board.

In the bottom of the fifth, Gonzalez and Fawcett both had RBI singles to add two more to tally and freshman first baseman Mark Stanford scored on a wild pitch to finalize the 8-1 victory for the Vikings.

The Long Beach City College baseball team will play again on Thursday, Apr. 26 at LA Harbor College at 2:30 p.m.
