Vikings Fall to Santa Ana 6-4 at Home

The No. 7 Long City College baseball team fell to the No. 5 Santa Ana College Dons 6-4 on Wednesday afternoon at the Viking Baseball Field. With the loss, the Vikings drop to 24-13 overall.

Freshman pitcher Julio Lopez (4-2) took the loss on the mound with allowing the Dons to three runs on five hits, while striking out two in six innings of work.

Santa Ana got on the board first with a two RBI double in the top of the second, then they extended their lead with an RBI single to end the inning with a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, the Vikings came back with a run in the bottom of the third inning from sophomore left fielder Andrew Schmitt.

The Dons score two more runs in the top of eighth to top the Vikings 5-1. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Vikings rallied with a triple from sophomore pinch hitter Robert Barham to score in Schmitt and sophomore third baseman Chris Rubottom to start closing in on the gap. Sophomore short stop Travis Aversa then hit a sacrifice fly to score in freshman center fielder Tyler Vargas to only trail the Dons by one run.

Santa Ana had one more in them in the top of the ninth and ended the game with the 6-4 win.

The Vikings will return to conference action on Tuesday, April 23rd against Compton College at 2:30 p.m.
