Pitcher Mitchell Knight Strikes Down Compton

The Long Beach City College baseball team took down the Compton College Tartars 8-4 with a come-from-behind conference win. With the win, the Vikings hold on to their 11-3 record, and are 2-0 in conference play.

Freshman pitcher Mitchell Knight (4-0) was on fire on the mound as he only allowed the Tartars to two hits in four innings, while striking down 10 batters, eight of them looking.

The Tartars were on top in the first inning with an RBI single and then ran in another in the top of the fourth to take the 2-0 lead over the Vikings.

In the bottom of the fourth, freshman second baseman Matthew Pinal hit an RBI single to bring in sophomore catcher Diego Altamirano to start creeping in on the Tartars 2-1.

Compton came back in the top of the fifth with two more runs, but then was shut out for the rest of the game by Knight.

In the bottom of the fifth, freshman left fielder Bryan Sanders singled to left field to score in sophomore first baseman Zach Rivas. Then the Vikings started their rally in the bottom of the sixth with two outs on the board and a two RBI single from sophomore right fielder Jake Creamer to score in Rivas and sophomore Ryan Guerero to tie the game 4-4. Before the inning was over, freshman third baseman Alex Seguine stole home to take the lead for the Vikings 5-4.

Altamirano batted sophomore center fielder Carter White and sophomore shortstop David Rivera in the bottom of the seventh to extend the lead to 7-4, then White hit an RBI single to center field to score in Creamer for the Vikings' final run in the bottom of the eighth to seal the 8-4 conference victory.

The Long Beach City College baseball team will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Compton College at 12 p.m.
