Long Beach Football Sees Four Vikings Hauling in SCFA Player of the Week Honors through First Three Weeks
The No. 6/11 Long Beach City College football team had a lot to celebrate in it's first three weeks of action which included four players be named to the Southern California Football Association (SCFA) Teams of the Week.
Week 1
Jake Maier – Offensive Player of the Week
Following a week one blowout, 41-14 blowout over the Pasadena City College Lancers, Maier was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week. He was dynamic by going 22-for-39 with 312 yards through the air leading to five touchdowns to five different receivers. Additionally, each touchdown pass was to a different receiver. The 6-1 freshman from La Habra, CA leads the Central League in passing yards-per-game (353) and touchdown passes (9)
Week 2
Jaylen Watson – Offensive Player of the Week
Watson led a dangerous aerial attack against Saddleback College by hauling in five catches for a total of 135 yards and a touchdown. It was not a challenge to find the end zone early, as Watson did so on the opening play from scrimmage as he broke free for the 85-yard TD snag. Additionally, he averaged 27 yards-per-reception. Watson currently ranks second in the Central League in yards-per-game (70.7)
Justin Collins – Special Teams/All-Purpose Player of the Week
Collins made his mark in the return game by taking a 92-yard kickoff to the house in the opening quarter to set the tone for the Vikings. He ended his night with a total of 172 yards on four returns to equal an average of 31.8 yards-per-return.
Week 3
Jacob Welch - Co-Offensive Player of the Week
Welsh made catching the pigskin look easy last Saturday in a 43-29 victory over Moorpark. He reeled in a team-high eight grabs for 176 yards leading to two reservations in the end zone. His longest reception of the night went for 53 yards and he averaged 22.3 yards-per-reception. Welch leading the Central League in receiving yards-per-game (85.3) and is tied for second in total receiving touchdowns (3).
