The No. 5 Long Beach City College football team played host to the Chaffey College Panthers on Saturday night in conference action at Veteran Memorial Stadium. The Vikings were a well-oiled machine on both ends of the pigskin that was highlighted by an effect, dual-threat passing game en route to a commanding 48-14 victory.

Freshman quarterback Jake Maier teamed up with freshman wide receiver Marcus Moore for the opening score of the game for a one yard touchdown pass to cap off a five play, 11 yard drive to grab the lead at 7-0. Long Beach finished out the first half by charging down the field for a 24-yard touchdown pass from Maier to freshman wide receiver Jabari Minix to hand the Vikings a solid 14-0 advantage following the first quarter.

After the Panthers trimmed the Viking's lead down to seven points in the opening minutes of the second quarter, Long Beach responded with three-consecutive scores to further distance themselves.

Cedric Byrd hauled in a 41-yard touchdown pass from Maier to finish off a clean, four play 65-yard push to the end zone. Freshman quarterback Grant Lowary was entered into the game to following drive and produced by hooking up with Minix for his second touchdown grab of the game. Sophomore wide receiver Isaiah Smith got a taste of the end zone in the final minutes of the second quarter by reeling in a 17-yard grab from Maier for six en route to a sizable, 34-7 advantage entering into halftime.

LBCC continued to dominate the contest through the remainder of the game by tacking on two insurance scores in the third and fourth quarter. Maier involved sophomore wide receiver Jacob Welch for a four-yard touchdown pass. Lowray chucked his second touchdown pass in the fourth quarter with sophomore wide receiver Justin Collins being the recipient leading to a 48-14 victory.

The passing game was truly the story of the contest with a total of 533 yards by going 35-for-42 leading to seven touchdowns. The aerial arsenal was monstrous with 11 different Vikings recording a snag. Minix was the most effective weapon by hauling in 10 catches for 167 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Byrd, Welch, and Moore all hauled in four grabs and a touchdown.

Freshman kicker Sergio Garcia was busy by booting home six of seven PAT attempts.

The defense was as strong as ever by halting the Panthers to just 14 points, marking the third time this season that they have held an opposition to the lowly mark. Sophomore defensive lineman Marcus Reynolds paced the pack by recording seven total stops with five of them coming solo. Additionally, he wreaked havoc in the backfield by recording two sacks for a loss of 12 yards. Freshman linebackers Korey Warren and Raymond Tufuga each notched five stops, while freshman defensive lineman Adebayo Soremekun backed them with four stops. Furthermore, Warren had the lone pick of the day that went for 34 yards.

The Vikings (5-2, 1-1 SCC) will take to the road on Saturday, October 29 to face off against L.A. Harbor at 6 p.m.
