The No. 14/23 Long Beach City College football team defeated the Moorpark College Raiders 62-3 in their second home game at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday evening, making them 2-1 overall. The Vikings came out the gates at full speed and kept their momentum on offense until the final whistle.
Freshman running back Elijah Bynum was the first to score within the first three minutes of the game for the Vikings by receiving a 31 yard pass from sophomore quarterback Grant Lowary. The Vikings continued their offensive pressure on the Raiders with a 42 yard field goal from freshman kicker Agustin Delgadillo. Sophomore wide receiver Jabari Minix was next up with an 11 yard pass from Lowary for LBCC's second touchdown. Freshman running back Job McGinty finished the quarter with a 45 yard touchdown to bring the score up 24-0.
In the second quarter, the Moorpark Raiders fumbled the ball on the 5 yard line, which resulted in freshman center back Malik Welch returning the ball into a 95 yard touchdown to take the half and shut out the Raiders 31-0.
Bynum came through in the third quarter with a 12 yard touchdown and freshman kicker Clay D'Amico from Valley Christian High School nailed his first field goal of the season.
In the fourth and final quarter, Cedric Byrd and Maurhqeze Mason both scored touchdowns to put the Vikings in a far reach from the Raiders. In response, Moorpark finally squeezed in a field goal to put themselves on the board. The Vikings had one more in them and Darrion Naylor scored the final 18 yard touchdown to end the game 62-3.
"I was really glad how we competed tonight," said head coach Brett Peabody about the game. "We were dominating in all phases of the game. We were doing what we were supposed to do."
In total, Long Beach rushed 342 yards and passed 261 yards. Sophomore linebacker Michael Jackson and freshman defensive lineman Chris Taliu both had five tackles each and sophomore defensive lineman Adebayo Soremekun had two back-to-back sacks.
The Vikings will play again next Saturday, Sept. 23 at the College of the Canyons at 6 p.m.
