Long Beach City College football fell to the Bakersfield College Renegades, 28-10, in their home opener on Saturday evening.
The Vikings took an early lead in the first quarter with a 24-yard field goal by Eric Zavala at the 9-minute mark. Shortly after, quarterback Jett Peddy connected with wide receiver Matthew Berenji for a 29-yard touchdown pass, extending the Vikings' lead to 10-0.
Berenji was a key contributor to the Vikings' offense, tallying 70 receiving yards and averaging 14 yards per catch.
Bakersfield responded with two touchdowns before halftime, shifting the momentum and taking a 14-10 lead into the break.
The Vikings' defense held the Renegades scoreless in the third quarter but were unable to contain them in the fourth. Bakersfield added two field goals and a safety to secure the 28-10 victory.
Defensively, Cordae Jones stood out for the Vikings, recording nine tackles, one interception, and 3.5 tackles for a loss of seven yards.
The Vikings will return to action next Saturday, Sept. 21, at Southwestern College. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
