Basketball's Bass Named Conference MVP, Head Coach Barry Barnes Earns Coach of The Year Award

After the state-ranked No.11 Long Beach City College men's basketball team hauled in their South Coast Conference (SCC) Championship, it was recently announced that four men's basketball athletes were recognized with All-SCC honors.

Head Coach Barry Barnes also earned the SCC Coach of the Year Award following the conference crown and finished the regular season 24-4 overall and 9-1 in conference action.

Freshman guard Jace Bass was announced All-SCC Most Valuable Player of the 2018-19 season. Sophomore guard Jamiu Akinbile and freshman guard Aaron Jelks were named to the All-SCC Division team, while sophomore forward Matthew Wooten was named to the Honorable Mention list.

Bass was named the Conference MVP as he led the SCC with averaging 24.9 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.2 steals per game. Bass was consistent as a leader for the Vikings and for the entire conference as well. At the line, he averaged 82.1% and totaled 249 points in conference action.

Akinbile earned All-SCC honors by putting himself in the third spot on the conference leaderboard with averaging eight rebounds per game. Akinbile was a constant threat at the rim by averaging 17 points per game and totaled 80 rebounds during conference play.

Jelks brought in All-SCC accolades with leading the team with 40 assists in SCC action. He was quick on his feet and swift in action by totaling 17 steals against his conference opponents.

Wooten finalized the All-SCC selections with Honorable Mention recogniton. Wooten totaled 55 rebounds and 78 points in conference play. He was a strong defensive player and had 20 blocks during the regular season.

The Southern California-ranked No. 6 Long Beach City College men's basketball team will host the No. 11 Santiago Canyon Hawks on Friday, Mar. 1 for the first round of the CCCAA Southern California Regional Playoffs in the Hall of Champions Gymnasium. Tip-off with be at 7 p.m. and live stats will be available on LBCCVikings.com. Game tickets will be sold for $12 at the door. The cost for admission for seniors and students will be $8.
