Long Beach men get No. 16 seed for playoffs; four named All-SCC South Division

The 2022-23 season will continue for the Long Beach City College men's basketball team. On Sunday, the Vikings were named the No. 16 seed for the upcoming Southern California Regional Playoffs.

Long Beach will host No. 18 Cypress College in a first-round game on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. Ticket prices for the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) postseason game at the Hall of Champions Gym are $12 for general admission and $8 for all identified students, faculty, staff, senior citizens age 60 and over, and children under 12 years old.

LBCC recently closed out the South Coast Conference South Division schedule tied for third place at 4-6 and are 16-12 overall as it heads into the postseason. The Vikings are making their second consecutive appearance in the playoffs. Last season (2021-22), Long Beach reached the second round.

Cypress enters Wednesday's contest with a 17-11 overall record and finished tied for second place in the Orange Empire Conference with a 10-6 mark.

Long Beach and Cypress will face each other for the second time this season. On Nov. 23, The Vikings erased a seven-point deficit to pull out a last-minute win, 71-70, at the Hall of Champions Gym.

The winner of Wednesday's game will travel to No. 2-seeded Citrus College for a second-round match up on Saturday (Feb. 22). Three wins are needed by the Vikings to advance to the CCCAA State Championships on March 9-12 at West Hills College Lemoore in Lemoore.

ALL-SCC SOUTH DIVISION HONORS

Following the close of the regular season, four Vikings earned All-South Coast Conference South Division postseason honors.

The Long Beach trio of Bonard Johnson Jr (16.6 points per game/5.3 rebounds per game), Lorenzo Marsh (15.7 PPG/6.3 RPG), and Kameron Mayhan (13.5 PPG/8.3 RPG) received first team honors while Shane Hunter (11.9 PPG/4.7 RPG) was an honorable mention selection.
