Men's Soccer: Burgos scores twice to lead LBCC to 3-1 win over El Camino

Freshman defender Robert Burgos scored a pair of goals and freshman goalkeeper Jesus Gutierrez (pictured) posted eight saves to lead the Long Beach City College men's soccer team to a 3-1 South Coast Conference win over visiting El Camino College on Tuesday.

The win improved Long Beach to 5-3-5 overall and 2-2-3 in the SCC while El Camino dropped to 3-4-5 and 2-3-2 in conference play.

The game featured plenty of offensive opportunities as the two squads combined for 37 shots, including 10 shots on goal by the Warriors and six on target by the Vikings.

But both teams supplied excellent defense and stellar play in goal in a scoreless first half. ECC defender Zach Petow broke up numerous LBCC scoring runs while keeper Nolan Dean also disrupted his share of plays.

Nolan's biggest save came in the 26th minute as Long Beach freshman midfielder Andres Montes led a 2-on-1 breakaway. Montes, instead of sending a cross pass, nailed a close-range shot from the near side of the goal that Nolan managed to get a hand on to keep the Vikings off the scoreboard.

Long Beach finally broke through in the 48th minute. After a pair of LBCC shots on goal, Burgos was able to put back freshman midfielder Christian Gonzalez' deflected shot past Nolan to put Long Beach up 1-0.

Chris Marckstadt scored El Camino's lone goal in the 64th minute when he nailed a penalty kick shot down the middle to even the score.

But Burgos put LBCC back ahead for good in the 70th minute when he bent his free kick from just outside the penalty box over the outstretched hands of Nolan for his second goal of the afternoon.

Montes sealed the win with a breakaway goal off a pass from freshman midfielder Luis Reynoso in the 89th minute.

Dean closed the game with three saves in 84 minutes of work for the Warriors.

Long Beach returns to action on Friday (Oct 21) when it travels to East Los Angeles College for a 6 pm conference game.
