Men's Soccer: No. 11 Long Beach upset by San Diego City, 2-1

The No. 11 nationally-ranked Long Beach City College men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, dropping a 2-1 non-conference game to visiting San Diego City College on Friday.

With the loss, LBCC fell to 2-1-1 while San Diego City improved to 2-1.

Despite playing in different conferences, a rivalry has slowly developed as the two squads have now played each other 13 times since 2008. And they will match up again on Tuesday (Sep 17) for another non-conference game in San Diego at 4 p.m.

On Friday, the Vikings took an early lead but couldn't hold it as SDCC scored the final two goals of the game.

It took Long Beach just four minutes to jump ahead as freshman Jose Garcia (Artesia HS, pictured) ripped a shot from 30 yards out for an impressive goal and 1-0 LBCC advantage. Freshmen Erik Carbajal (Lakewood HS) and Joel Altilano (Artesia HS) were credited with assists on the play.

But San Diego City tied the game with a goal in the ninth minute and pulled ahead for good with a second-half goal for the victory.
