Men’s Swimming & Diving: Carrillo, Aakhus lead LBCC to 21st-place state finish

Sophomore Michael Carrillo (pictured) had a pair of top-10 finishes while sophomore Mac Aakhus had two top-15 showings to lead Long Beach City College to a 21st place finish this past weekend (Apr. 25-27) at the 2013 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Swimming & Diving Championship at East Los Angeles College.

Carrillo and Aakhus combined to score 41 points for the Vikings. LBCC was just two points back of Riverside in 19th place and one point behind 20th-place Chaffey.

Carrillo capped his record-setting career by placing in two of the three events he qualified for at the state finals.

On Thursday, Carrillo set a new LBCC school record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:36.89 to finish in sixth place. Just last week, Carrillo also set a new school record in the 200-yard freestyle at the South Coast Conference Championships with a time of 1:41.69.

Carrillo came back on Friday to finish in seventh place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:43.12. Also at the state finals, he swam 48.47 in the 100-yard freestyle preliminaries.

Aakhus swam his best race on Saturday when he finished in seventh place in the 200-yard backstroke, clocking in at 1:56.98. On Friday, Aakhus finished in 13th place in the 100-yard backstroke at 54.21. Aakhus also qualified for the 500-yard freestyle and swam 4:50.64 in the preliminaries.
