Men’s Volleyball: No. 1 Long Beach wastes little time in sweep of Santa Monica

The No. 1 state-ranked Long Beach City College men's volleyball team needed just 59 minutes to defeat No. 10 Santa Monica College as the Vikings swept the Corsairs 25-20, 25-21, 25-11 on Friday at LBCC.

The Western State Conference win improved Long Beach to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play. LBCC has swept seven of its eight opponents and has lost just one of 25 sets played this season.

Freshman Brett Anema (Valley Christian HS) had an efficient night on the court, collecting five kills on six attempts with no errors for an impressive .833 attack percentage. He also added four digs, two blocks, and one ace.

Sophomore Max Wechsung (St. John Bosco HS) had a good all-around match as he totaled 14 assists, four kills, four blocks, and three aces. Freshman Greg Utupo (Mayfair HS, pictured) led the Vikings with seven kills.

Connor Corgiat led Santa Monica (3-7, 0-3 WSC) with seven kills. The Corsairs hit a combined -.020 for the match and made 24 hitting errors.

Long Beach returns to action on Wednesday (Mar 14) when it travels to Moorpark College for a 6 pm WSC match.
