Men’s Volleyball: McLean named State Athlete of the Month for April

Long Beach City College sophomore outside hitter Rob McLean has been named the male State Athlete of the Month by the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) and the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA).

McLean helped lead LBCC to the 2012 CCCAA Men's Volleyball State Championship. He was named the State Championship Most Valuable Player after totaling 31 kills, 10 blocks, and seven digs over two state tournament matches.

In the State Championship final against Orange Coast College, McLean led LBCC with 15 kills to go with five blocks, three digs, and two aces.

During the month of April, McLean was the driving force in the Vikings' offense as they closed out their regular season and state championship run. He averaged 14 kills per match over LBCC's final five contests. In Long Beach's sweep over No. 2 state-ranked El Camino College on April 6, McLean posted 14 kills, five digs, and three blocks. He followed that with a big 13-kill, 13-dig effort to close out the conference schedule at Santa Barbara City College on April 11.

McLean was also named first-time All-Western State Conference. He is set to continue his academic and athletic career at Brandon University in Manitoba, Canada.

McLean joins a list of six other Vikings earn the state athlete of the month honor since the program's inception in September of 2005: Rayven Sellers (women's basketball, Dec. 2009), Manuel Batista (men's soccer, Sep. 2008), Randy Serrato (baseball, Feb. 2008), Eric Williams (men's basketball, Jan. 2007), Ashling Taylor (women's water polo, Nov. 2006), and Pearson Smith (men's basketball, Feb. 2006).
