Men’s Volleyball: Long Beach wins one out of three during tough opening weekend

Facing some of the top teams in the state, the Long Beach City College men's volleyball team won one match out of three to open up the 2016 season. On Friday, the Vikings suffered a 3-0 loss at Golden West College in their season opener and split its contests with Orange Coast College (loss) and Los Angeles Pierce (win).

Despite being swept by the Rustlers in the opener, the Vikings were definitely in each set. The Vikings lost by scores of 25-23, 25-21, and 25-19. Sophomore Charles Belvin (Lakewood HS) led the Long Beach offense with nine kills. He also added four blocks, three digs, and an ace in his season debut.

Freshman Travis O'Gorman (East Northport, NY) also played well in his first match as a Viking. He totaled eight kills and five digs while freshman setter Gary Trejo (Warren HS) totaled 24 assists.

On Sunday at the Golden West quad, LBCC suffered a five-set loss to rival Orange Coast College but bounced back with a sweep of L.A. Pierce.

Long Beach will get the next two weeks off until returning to the court to host San Diego Miramar College on February 17 at 6 p.m. in the Vikings' home opener.
