Men’s Volleyball Earns Top Conference Nods, Charrette Named Coach of the Year

At the conclusion of the postseason, the Long Beach City College men's volleyball team saw six Vikings earn Western State Conference (WSC)-South All-Conference selections. Sophomore opposite/outside hitter Steven Rotter tops the awards by being named the WSC-South Most Valuable Player. Sophomore libero Steven Morales also earned top nods with being named the WSC-South Libero of the Year. Sophomore middle blockers Andrew Pearson and Victor Villarreal earned First-Team All-WSC-South recognition, while freshmen outside hitter Miller Davis and Rémi Pourrat brought in Second-Team All-WSC-South honors.  

Head Coach Jonathan Charrette was named the WSC-South Coach of the Year for the third-consecutive season as well. Since Charrette has taken over the helm, he has earned four WSC-South Conference titles, has made the CCCAA State Championship Tournament every year and has won two state championship titles. Charrette has remained undefeated in conference play for the past three seasons and currently boasts an overall record of 121-25.

Rotter not only earned WSC-South Most Valuable Player, but was also named to the All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the CCCAA State Championship Tournament. As theWSC-South MVP, Rotter totaled 80 kills in 17 sets in conference action. He boasted a 4.71 kills per set average and had a .344 hitting percentage. In total, Rotter acquired 85 points in conference play with averaging 5 points per set.

Morales was named the WSC-South Libero of the Year for his skills behind the ball. Morales helped the Vikings advance to the State Championship with having 11 digs and four assists against Miramar in their first round of playoffs.  In conference play, Morales brought in 30 total digs and averaged 1.5 digs per set.

Pearson brought home First-Team All-WSC –South honors with having the highest hitting percentage in the state with a .525. In conference action, Pearson had 37 kills on 59 attacks, three service aces and 12 total blocks.

Villarreal also earned First-Team All-WSC-South accolades by being a force at the net. Villarreal averaged 1.31 blocks per set and totaled 21 blocks during conference play and 51 blocks for the entire season. He rallied 40.5 points during conference and had a .404 hitting percentage to keep his opponents on their toes.

Davis hauls in Second-Team All-WSC-South honors by earning recognition as an outside hitter. Davis recorded 25 kills during conference and 11 kills during the entire season. He averaged 1.39 kills per set and only made 10 errors on 68 attacks.

Pourrat rounds out the All-Conference leaders with a Second-Team All-WSC-South nod as an outside hitter. He averaged 1.47 kills per set on 67 total attacks in conference play. He totaled four service aces in conference with 13 overall during the season. Pourrat was also a force at the net with 14 blocks in conference and 36 overall.
