Softball: Vikings’ four-game winning streak snapped with loss to Cerritos

The Long Beach City College softball team suffered its first South Coast Conference loss of the season after losing 10-2 in six innings to visiting Cerritos College on Thursday at LBCC.

The loss snapped the Vikings' four-game winning streak and dropped their record to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Cerritos (7-5, 3-1 SCC) totaled 11 hits in the game on its way to the mercy-rule win.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first inning. Cerritos scored an unearned run after a two-out LBCC error while the Vikings got a RBI single from sophomore Reanna Guzman that scored freshman Cierra Peterson.

The Falcons added three more runs in the second and led 6-2 after a two-run fourth inning. In the second, Ariana Mejia delivered a two-out, bases-loaded single to drive in two runs.

Cerritos broke the game open with four runs in the sixth to put into effect the eight-run mercy rule.

Long Beach had six hits on the day, including two from freshman Victoria Padilla (pictured). She went 2 for 3 with a RBI single in the third inning to bring home sophomore Shanise Compton for the Vikings' final run.

Freshman Candice Shadwell allowed five runs and seven hits over three innings to pick up the loss. She struck out four and walked four.

Kayla Klein went the distance in the win for Cerritos. She allowed two runs and six hits while striking out seven, including the final six batters she faced. Stephanie Olivas went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and a pair of runs to lead the Cerritos offense.

Long Beach returns to action on Friday (Feb. 22) at 2:30 pm when it hosts Santa Barbara City College in a non-conference game.
