The Long Beach City College softball team rallied for a 7-6 South Coast Conference win over visiting Los Angeles Harbor College on Tuesday at LBCC.
What appeared to be an early blowout turned into a nail bitter for the Vikings.
Long Beach jumped on Harbor starting pitcher Joana Olivo for three runs in the first, added two more in the second, and was up 6-2 after three innings.
But the Seahawks rallied for four runs off LBCC relief pitcher Marissa Freese in the top of the fifth inning to tie up the game at 6-6.
Long Beach came right back in the bottom of the fifth to put up the eventual game-winning run. Cierra Peterson drew a one-out walk and promptly stole second base. After a walk by Lauren Alferos, Jezeree Misaalefua (3 for 4, pictured) smacked a base-hit up the middle to bring home Peterson.
Shanise Compton hit a solo homerun in the third and was 2 for 3. Melissa Yepez (2 for 3) and Alferos (2 for 2, 1 run, 1 RBI) also had two hits for the Vikings.
Candice Shadwell allowed one run and four hits over 4 2/3 innings for the win. She tossed the first two innings of the game and closed out the victory pitching the final 2 2/3 innings.
Jazmin Culpepper (3 for 3) and Brittany Bailey (1 for 4) both hit solo homeruns for Harbor (8-17, 1-12 SCC).
Long Beach (17-9, 9-4 SCC) plays at Mt. San Antonio College on Thursday at 3 p.m.
