The Long Beach City College softball team opened South Coast Conference (SCC) - South play on Thursday evening by facing off against the Cerritos College Falcons at home under sunny conditions. The Vikings rode an excellent pitching performance from freshman hurler Alissa Cienfuegos (Carson, CA) and provided the necessary offense en route to a 2-0 victory.

Cienfuegos earned her 10th start of the season and rose to the occasion as she has been all season. The freshman phenome halted the Falcons to a trio of hits while striking out seven batters. Additionally, she retired the side four times.

The Vikings' offense got to work early by etching their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore second baseman Daisy Velasquez (Bellflower, CA) reached base by barreling a one-out single and later came home to score on a Cienfuegos triple. Cienfuegos touched home a batter later after sophomore third baseman Denise Flores (Carson, CA) recorded a sacrifice ground out.

From the first inning on, Long Beach played flawless defense en route to the victory.

Cienfuegos (5-5) earned the win in the circle after chucking her first-career complete-game shutout, while the top of the order provided all of the hitting.

LBCC (10-9, 1-0 SCC) will continue action on Saturday, March 11th for a doubleheader against San Diego Mesa on the road. The first pitch is set for 11 a.m.
