The Long Beach City College softball squad was firing on all cylinders Thursday evening by facing off against the L.A. Harbor College Seahawks on their home diamond. The Vikings handled the Seahawks with ease after blanking L.A. Harbor 8-0 to defeat them via run rule.

After hitting the ball extremely hard in the opening frame, but right at the Seahawk defense, the Vikings rebounded the following inning to plate three runs. Sophomore third baseman Denise Flores (Carson, CA) kicked off the scoring by lacing an RBI-double to the left-center gap to score pinch runner Lauren Blevins (Downey, CA). Freshman center fielder Cynthia Ruiz (Long Beach, CA) followed by poking a single to center field, pushing across Flores. Sophomore left fielder Faith Hernandez (Downey, CA) capped off the scoring by launching a sacrifice fly to center field, plating Ruiz for the 3-0 advantage.

Long Beach continued to pile it on in the bottom of the third inning, starting with freshman first baseman Julia Juarez (Long Beach, CA) barreling a single up the middle to score sophomore second baseman Daisy Velasquez (Bellflower, CA) who reached base via single. Hernandez followed by pushing across another run with a groundball to the shortstop. Juarez came around to score on the same play due to a throwing error by the shortstop. Freshman catcher Samantha Ontiveros (Norwalk, CA) knocked a single to right field to complete the scoring for the Vikings, thus leading to an 8-0 defeat.

The Vikings utilized a pitcher by committee format in the circle with freshman hurler Vanessa Montanez (5-3) earning the start and picking up the victory. She tossed two innings and earned a pair of strikeouts.

Sophomore hurler Anissa Hamilton (Downey, CA) followed in the circle by fanning a trio of Seahawks in two innings of action, backed by the final frame tossed by freshman Savannah Gonzalez (Long Beach, CA).

The Vikings (12-11, 2-1 SCC) will face off against Santiago Canyon for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 18th. Game times are set for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
