Vikings Hauls in Two Victories in Double Header Over San Diego Mesa

The Long Beach City College softball team won both games in their double header against San Diego Mesa College on Friday afternoon. The Vikings won both games 7-4 to bring their overall record to 5-2.

In the first game against the Olympians, freshman pitcher Elena Vizcarra (2-0) took the win.

The Olympians scored the first run of the day in the first inning, but then the Vikings came back with two runs from sophomore first baseman Julia Juarez and freshman outfielder Emilee Hoppe in the second inning to take the lead.

The Olympians upped the ante with three runs in the third inning. Long Beach City College wasn't finished yet and loaded the bases in the bottom of the third. Sophomore catcher Samantha Ontiveros was hit by a pitch, which brought in freshman outfielder Samantha Navas and then Viscarra reached on a Olympian error to run in Hoppe.

In the bottom of the fourth, sophomore outfielder Lauren Blevins batted in sophomore designated player Alissa Cienfuegos. Cienfuegos then finished the game with one more run from a wild pitch to seal the Vikings first win 7-4.

In the second game of the day, San Diego Mesa scored the first run in the top of the first and then two more in the top of the second inning.

The Vikings loaded the bases once more and Juarez batted in Vizcarra for their first run. Hoppe and Blevins were walked to bring in Jennifer Tobar and pitcher Cienfuegos. Juarez was next to score off a single from sophomore outfielder Alijah Vega and then Blevins ran in the last run of the third inning from an Olympian error.

San Diego Mesa had one more punch left and homered in the top of the fifth, but Vikings refused to stand down and freshman utility Raven Agapay smashed a double to bat in Vizcarra for the Vikings' last run and for the 7-4 win.

Cienfuegos (3-2) took the win on the mound for the second game with only four hits and one run in 4 innings of work.

The Vikings will play again on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 2:30 pm at Pasadena City College.
