Softball Blanks Compton Tartars 5-0

The Long Beach City College softball team shut-out the Compton College Tartars 5-0 on Thursday afternoon at the Viking Softball Field. With the win, the Vikings improve to 18-15 overall, and 9-9 in the South Coast Conference.

Freshman pitcher Joette Vega (9-4) earned her ninth win in the circle with holding the Tartars to only three hits, while striking out seven. Vega has been unstoppable this season as she averages 4.85 strikeouts per game and holds a 3.07 ERA.

The Vikings opened the game with freshman second baseman Yazmin Zendejas hitting a triple to left field. Then freshman catcher Jocelyn Cebedo got base with a walk. Freshman third baseman Ileana Rivera was up next at the dish with a bomb to right field to score in Zendejas and Cebedo to take the initial 2-0 lead over the Tartars.

The Vikings were at it again in the third inning with freshman center fielder Maria Aguilar hitting a single to left field. Aguilar then stole second and third base and was batted in by sophomore first baseman Ashley Pozo to extend the Vikings' lead to 3-0.

The Vikings scored two more runs from Zendejas and freshman short stop Jade Wittman in the bottom of the fourth inning to seal the 5-0 shut-out win over Compton College.

The Vikings will return to the field on Monday, April 8, against Citrus College at 2 p.m.
