Vikings Blank Seahawks Behind Harris’ No-Hitter, Win 8-0 in Six Innings
The No. 7-ranked softball team continued their dominant season with an 8-0 mercy-rule victory over LA Harbor.
The No. 7-ranked Long Beach City College softball team continued their dominant season with a commanding 8-0 mercy-rule victory over LA Harbor on Thursday afternoon in South Coast Conference action. With the win, the Vikings improve to 32-4 overall and 21-2 in conference play.
Sophomore ace Hailey Harris delivered a lights-out performance in the circle, tossing a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts to shut down the Seahawks' offense. The effort marked one of the most dominant outings of the year and a personal milestone for Harris, who has been a force for the Vikings all season, improving to 19-3 overall.
"I'm so grateful for this program and all that my coaches and teammates have done to support me all season long," said Harris. "The trust I have in my teammates is what helps me be confident in the circle and allows me to perform like I did today. Losing my grandma, whose love for softball really bonded us, was really hard this season, but I can't help but think she was watching me today. This no-no was for her."
Head Coach and Director of Softball Operations Megan Martinez praised her pitcher and the overall team effort, noting, "Excited for another conference sweep—but even more excited to keep the momentum rolling with Harris on the mound. She threw a no-hitter today and that is something to be proud of."
The Vikings' offense backed Harris early and often, starting with an RBI single by Alesa Gonzalez in the second inning. Long Beach erupted for three more runs in the third, including an RBI double from Michelle Cervantes, and added four more in the sixth to secure the walk-off win.
Cervantes finished with three RBIs, while Anaya Togia capped the game with a walk-off triple to right field. "Today's win was a team win and a pass-the-bat type of game," said Togia. "Our defense and pitching was phenomenal today and I think that's what really tied everything together. Especially in the last inning—I went up there telling myself and my team that I was going to hit it the opposite way, and I did. It felt amazing. I love this team and the chemistry we have."
Long Beach will look to carry their momentum into non-conference action on Friday, April 18, when they host Southwestern College at 12 p.m. at LBCC.
