The Long Beach City College softball team made history on Tuesday afternoon, securing the South Coast Conference Championship with a clutch 3-1 win over El Camino College. The title marks the Vikings' first SCC crown since 2002.
After falling behind early in the third inning on an inside-the-park home run from El Camino, the Vikings answered back with three unanswered runs to take control of the game.
In the bottom of the sixth, Jaela Ruiz tied the game with a booming RBI double to right-center, driving in Mikaela Pacheco. Then in the seventh, Pacheco came through in the clutch, delivering a two-run single that brought home Anaya Togia and Michelle Cervantes, sealing the 3-1 victory.
Hailey Harris was dominant in the circle, earning her 21st win of the season. She tossed a complete game, allowing just five hits and one earned run while striking out five.
With the conference title in hand, the Vikings (21-3) will return to the diamond for Sophomore Day on Wednesday, April 23, hosting San Diego Mesa at 3 p.m.
