LBCC Women's Basketball Dominates Season Opener in 79-22 Victory

The Long Beach City College women's basketball team kicked off its 2016-17 campaign on Friday evening by facing off against the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines at the Mt. SAC Tip Off Tournament. The Vikings had no problems hitting the hardwood for the first time of the year by handily defeating the Wolverines by the final score of 79-22.

The Vikings did not allow the Wolverines to reach double-digit scoring in any quarter which was highlighted by a 28-3 third quarter.

In the third stanza, freshman guard Tiana Augustus kicked off the scoring with a jumper followed by another jumper just two minutes later. Sophomore center Miranda Martinez kissed two points off the glass and later converted two free throws to give Long Beach a 44-12 advantage.

Sophomore guard Vivian Hernandez exploded for seven points by scoring on three-consecutive possessions which included a three pointer. Sophomore forward Ayerjenee Jeanmard followed suit by snapping the bottom of the net with a three pointer as well. Freshman guard Alexis Camarena chipped in two layups, followed by a bucket from freshman guard CeAirra Clement to hand the Vikings a 64-13 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

After scoring 15 points in the fourth quarter that was influenced by a combined eight points from freshman guard Shakiyah Maiden and Martinez, the Vikings cruised to an easy 79-22 victory.

Hernandez led the way by tallying a game-high 23 points that included a 5-for-12 mark from beyond the arc. Jeanmard was three rebounds and three assist shy from a triple-double as she finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.

Maiden and Camarena combined for 12 points off the bench, while Maiden led the team in rebounds with 10.

The Vikings will face off against Rio Hondo on Saturday, November 5 in the second round of the Mt. SAC Tournament. The game is set to tip off at 5 p.m.
