The Long Beach City College women's basketball team hit the road to compete in the Pasadena City College President's Roundball Classic starting with a round one matchup against the West Los Angeles College Wildcats. The Vikings fought to a victory over the Wildcats by outscoring them in the first three quarters leading to a 48-40 victory.
Sophomore center Miranda Martinez kicked off the scoring for the Vikings by working her way to the charity stripe and nailing two free throws. Freshman forward Brittnay McDaniel hit a jumper the following possession to tie the contest. Sophomore forward Ayerjenee Jeanmard gave the Vikings their first lead of the game after pocketing a steal and taking it coast-to-coast for a layup. Martinez capped off the opening quarter with a layup assisted by freshman guard Tiana Augustus leading to an earl 12-8 lead.
Martinez continued to drop buckets by kicking off the second quarter with a layup. Sophomore guard Vivian Hernandez flushed a triple to back her efforts, followed by four points off the hand of freshman guard Janay Wellington and Augustus, respectfully, to maintain a 22-15 advantage entering into halftime.
Hernandez and Martinez continued to carry a hot hand into the third quarter by combining for five points in the opening minutes of the third quarter. Hernandez went on to close the third quarter by hitting a triple to maintain a 10-point lead at 38-28.
Freshman guard Alexis Camarena came alive off the bench in the fourth quarter to hit two three pointers en route to a 48-40 victory.
Martinez paced the offense with 12 points to go along with six rebounds, one steal, and one block. Augustus backed her with eight points. Additionally, she was a nightmare on defense by swooping five steals and hauling in five rebounds.
The Vikings (4-1) will compete in round two of the PCC President's Roundball Classic on Friday, November 11th . The opponent and time is TBA.
