Women's Soccer: DeAnda posts second straight shutout in 1-0 win over ECC

Freshman goalkeeper Jeanette DeAnda posted six saves and added an assist to help lead the Long Beach City College women's soccer team to a 1-0 South Coast Conference win over visiting El Camino College on Tuesday.

It was DeAnda's and the Vikings' second straight shutout and improved Long Beach to 9-4-0 overall and 5-2-0 in conference play.

DeAnda was under fire early as El Camino began the contest taking shots from long distance. The Warriors outshot Long Beach 9-2 in the first half and came out ahead 14-8 in shots for the game.

But DeAnda was up for the challenge, as she broke up numerous El Camino breakaways and cross passes from out of the goal.

After a scoreless opening half, the Vikings finally broke through for the lone goal in the 48th minute.

After collecting an errant El Camino pass, DeAnda punted the ball three-quarters the length of the field to find sophomore forward Claudia Toledo. After a few bounces, Toledo collected the pass and nailed her shot past ECC goalkeeper Bronwyn O'Neil for the eventual game-winning goal.

Toledo nearly scored earlier in the contest when her breakaway shot in the 17th minute appreared to be in the net, but it hit the inside of the right post and bounced back into the arms of O'Neil while laying on the ground.

O'Neil closed the game with two saves for El Camino (9-4-1, 4-3-0 SCC). Becca Maier led the Warriors with eight shots.

Long Beach returns to action on Friday (Oct 21) when it travels to East Los Angeles College for a 4:15 pm SCC game.
