Women’s Soccer: Long Beach edged 1-0 at home by Sierra

It was another tough home contest for the Long Beach City College women's soccer team as the Vikings suffered a 1-0 non-conference loss to visiting Sierra College of Rocklin on Sunday.

Home hasn't been such a special place for the Vikings yet. After outscoring its opponents 11-1 over its first three road games, LBCC has suffered consecutive 1-0 losses on its own field.

Long Beach was outshot by a 12-9 margin on Sunday and couldn't make the most of its limited scoring opportunities.

After a scoreless first half, Sierra got on the board in the 59th minute. A foul was called on LBCC just outside its own penalty box. Sierra's Monet Filteau bent her free kick over the LBCC wall and into the upper left corner of the goal for what proved to be the game-winner.

The Vikings nearly scored the equalizer in the 83rd minute. Freshman Rocio Hernandez (Warren HS, pictured) nailed a cross field shot from the left side that hit the right goal post. After the bounce, the ball appeared to be heading into the goal, but Sierra goalkeeper Janell Grace was able to knock the ball away to keep Long Beach scoreless.

Sophomore Jeanette DeAnda (El Dorado HS) totaled four saves in goal for the Vikings (3-2-0 overall).

Grace also picked up four saves for Sierra (3-2-1).

Long Beach will play the third of three straight home games on Friday (Sep 21) when it hosts Taft College at 2 pm.
