Women’s Volleyball: Vikings drop season opener at Ventura, 3-1

It wasn't the start head coach Trisha Marx was hoping for, but the Long Beach City College women's volleyball team had its moments in a 3-1 season-opening loss at Ventura College on Wednesday night.

After dropping the opening sets 25-15 and 25-17, LBCC jumped out to a 19-11 advantage in the third set and eventually held on for a 25-22 win. But the host Pirates (3-0) dashed any hopes of a comeback with a match-clinching 25-18 win in the fourth.

Freshman Kassidy Harrington (Western HS) was impressive on offense in her LBCC debut, leading the Vikings with 15 kills. Sophomore Lauren Christensen (Valley Christian HS) also had a good night, posting 13 kills, four digs, and three blocks while sophomore Helen Marangos chipped in with seven kills, four digs, four blocks, and two aces.

Freshman Mary Delgado (Lakewood HS) totaled 25 assists to lead Long Beach in her Viking debut.

Long Beach (0-1) returns to action this Saturday (Sept. 5) when it hosts the six-team LBCC Tournament. The Vikings will face Mesa College of Arizona at 11:00 a.m. followed by a 12:30 p.m. match against San Diego Mesa College. Matches will be played in the Hall of Champions Gym as well as the volleyball gym (Q Bldg.).
