Volleyball Defeats San Diego Mesa in Home Opener

Women's volleyball fell in their home opener in the LBCC Quad Tournament against the Saddleback Gauchos in five sets (21-25, 25-23, 25-20, 20-25, 10-15) and then came back and defeated the San Diego Mesa Olympians in their second game in a three-straight set victory (25-20, 25-19, 25-16).

Sophomore Tatyana Umi led the way in the game against Saddleback with 20 kills to go along with two aces. Setter Lusia Lutali was effective on the paint with 29 assists and 11 digs. Outside hitter Andrea Edwards, middle blocker Valeria Payan and Tatyana Umi all were defensive threats on the court with providing three block assists each against the Gauchos.

In the second game against San Diego Mesa, freshman outside hitter Shelby Cole led the team with 11 digs. Outside hitter freshman Josannah Vazquez totaled nine kills for the game and had one service ace for the Vikings. Freshman Aysia Mabry and setter Sierra Davis both nailed three service aces each to help seal the first win of the season for the Vikings.

The Vikings (1-1) will play again at Grossmont College on Friday, Sept. 6 at 6 p.m.
