No. 13 Vikings Win Thirteenth-Consecutive Game

The women's volleyball team swept the East Los Angeles College Huskies on Wednesday evening in a South Coast Conference Crossover match. The Vikings won by the sets of 25-16, 25-16, 25-17 and are now 14-3 overall and 4-0 in conference.

The team dominated offensively the entire game by totaling 44 kills, 45 digs, and five service aces.

Sophomore Tatyana Umi opened the game with the first point for the Vikings, followed by a kill from freshman outside hitter Josannah Vazquez and a spectacular service ace from Austin Edwards. The Vikings commanded the lead from the start and finished the set 25-16.

In the second set, the Vikings took the lead early yet again with points from sophomore middle blocker Andrea Edwards and freshman outside hitter Jessica Blakeman. The Vikings finished the set with freshman setter Amber Bangma on the serve and two-consecutive kills from Edwards and freshman outside hitter Jasmine Palacios.

The Vikings struggled at the beginning of the third set by falling behind to the Huskies 9-1. After a timeout, the Vikings came back hungry for the win and dominated physically with nine-consecutive kills. The Vikings took back the lead and finished the set 25-17 for the 3-0 win.

Umi led the team with nine kills, with Sierra Davis closely behind with seven kills and 20 assists. Davis, Isabella Alvarez, Austin Edwards, and Vasquez all had service aces.  

The Vikings will play again in another SCC Crossover game on Friday, Oct. 27 against Rio Hondo College at 6 p.m at Long Beach City College.
