Women's Water Polo: LBCC opens season with three wins at Cypress tourney

The Long Beach City College women's water polo team picked up three wins out of four games this weekend at the Cypress College tournament to open up the 2012 season.

On Friday morning, the Vikings cruised to an 11-6 win over host Cypress. Sophomore Christine MacLennan led LBCC with four goals and Mackenzie Woolvett added three goals against the Chargers.

Later that day, Long Beach suffered its first loss of the season, falling 9-7 in a narrow contest to Orange Coast College.

The Vikings bounced back on Saturday with a pair of convicing wins to close out the tourney.

Freshman Jessica Diaz scored three goals in a 12-3 victory over Sierra College. LBCC ended the weekend with its biggest win of the young season, a 21-5 blowout against Miramar College. Sophomore Jackie Rojas (pictured) had a team-high five goals in the victory.

"I think the weekend went  well for us," said LBCC head coach Chris Oeding. "I'm sure we will see Orange Coast at least two or three more times this season, so we'll have plenty of chances to get back at them."

Long Beach (3-1) returns to action on Wednesday at 3 pm when it opens South Coast Conference play at Pasadena City College.
