Women's Water Polo: Vikings edge Chaffey 10-8 in OT to close SCC schedule

Freshman Ranya El-Tawil (pictured) scored a game-high four goals, including the go-ahead goal in overtime, to lead No. 5 state-ranked Long Beach City College to a 10-8 win over visiting Chaffey College on Wednesday.

Chaffey jumped out to a 3-1 first-quarter lead before the Vikings rallied back to tie up the game 4-4 just before halftime. The Vikings kept the rally going with four unanswered goals by Jessica Diaz (2), Libby Berry, and El-Tawil in the third quarter to go up 8-4.

But the Panthers turned the tide in the fourth, responding with four goals of their own. Monique Bernal's goal with 18 seconds left in the fourth tied up the contest at 8-8 and sent the game to overtime.

In extra time, El-Tawil fired her shot in the back of the cage as time expired in the first OT period and Christine MacLennan added an insurance goal at the 2:52 mark in the second overtime to secure the LBCC victory.

MacLennan scored three goals for LBCC while Taylor Faust had seven saves in goal, including three in overtime, for the Vikings.

With the win, the Vikings closed the regular season with a 17-9 overall record and 6-1 mark in conference play. Long Beach will earn the No. 2 seed for next week's (Nov. 1-3) South Coast Conference Championships at Pasadena City College.
