The dynasty known as the Long Beach City College women's water polo team continued Saturday with the Vikings clinching their ninth straight South Coast Conference title and stretching their conference-only winning streak to 83 games dating back to 2015. The SCC Tournament was played Nov. 7 and 9 at Mt. San Antonio College.
The state #1-ranked Vikings (33-2, 10-0 in SCC games) coasted to a 17-5 victory over Mt. San Antonio in the championship final behind four goals each by Lola Annear and Jennifer Connelly. Annear led the defense with seven of a whopping 25 steals overall. LBCC shot 55 percent from the field. Rachel Donahue tallied two goals for Mt. SAC (13-9, 8-2 in SCC play).
The team's depth allowed LBCC to not have to rely on the South Coast's Triple Crown statistical leader in goals, assists and steals in Olivia Slavens, who will be a key factor when the team opens the SoCal Regional Playoffs as the #1 seed. The Vikings were ranked #1 in the state all season.
The Vikings opened the SCC tourney with a 24-2 win over Pasadena City, then had an easy time again in defeating Cerritos, 18-2, in the semifinals. The Mounties beat El Camino, 14-9, in the other semifinal. In that win, Mt. SAC was paced by Carolyn Kao's seven goals.
THIRD PLACE FINAL: El Camino 18, Cerritos 6--The Warriors (11-12, 7-3) got five goals by Yanie Camarador and four by Savanna Kastigar in taking third place in the SCC over the Falcons. Cerritos was paced by Citlali Antonio with four goals.
FIFTH PLACE FINAL: East Los Angeles 10, Chaffey 5--The Huskies got four goals from Brisa Ayala and goalie Camilla Zacarias totaled nine saves to lead ELAC to fifth place. Chaffey goalie Anna Marcucci made 10 saves.
SEVENTH PLACE FINAL: Rio Hondo 15, Pasadena City 11--The Roadrunners trailed the Lancers, 9-6, in third quarter, but rallied with five goals in the fourth period to grab seventh in the conference. Emily Narvaez led the Rio Hondo attack with seven goals while PCC's Luna Encinas scored three.
