Football: Former LBCC standout, professional player Bill Jessup dies at age 85January 20, 2015The Long Beach community lost another standout former athlete as Bill Jessup passed away at the age of 85 on January 3. Jessup stared for the Long Beach City College football team as a tight end and defensive back during the 1947 season before transferring to USC to play three seasons.

Football: Vikings' Bateman, Iakopo named to All-State teamJanuary 05, 2015The postseason honors continue to roll in for a Long Beach City College football team that put together an impressive 9-2 overall record in 2014. Freshman running back Anterio Bateman and freshman free safety London Iakopo were both named to the California Community College Football Coaches Association (CCCFCA) Region III All-California team.

Football: Potter, Granch, Scoggins sign letters of intent to continue academic and athletic careersDecember 17, 2014Three members of the 2014 Long Beach City College football team have signed their National Letters of Intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at four-year NCAA Division I universities. Quarterback Kenny Potter (San Pedro HS) has signed with San Jose State University, tight end Clayton Granch (Valley Christian HS) will move on to New Mexico State University, and offensive lineman Patrick Scoggins (Palos Verdes HS) heads to Iowa State University.

Football: Vikings shut out of playoffs, host Golden West in Beach BowlNovember 16, 2014Despite an impressive 8-2 overall record and a win over previous top-ranked Mt. San Antonio College, the Long Beach City College football team was left out of the four-team Southern California playoffs. Instead, the Vikings will host Golden West College in the Beach Bowl to close out the 2014 season on Saturday, November 22. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Former LBCC Football head coach Jim Stangeland passes away at the age of 92October 28, 2014Jim Stangeland, one of Long Beach City College’s all-time greatest coaches as well as one of the best to come out of the city of Long Beach, passed away on Saturday (Oct. 25) in Huntington Beach at the age of 92. Stangeland is a member of the LBCC Hall of Champions, Long Beach State Hall of Fame, Long Beach Century Club Hall of Fame, and the California Community College Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Despite facing a Los Angeles Harbor team that hadn’t won since 2012 while having a game against nationally-ranked Mt. San Antonio College looming, the Vikings took care of business and cruised to a 62-7 win over the Seahawks on Saturday in Wilmington.

On the Vikings’ opening offensive play, Potter rushed for 75 yards on his way to totaling 362 yards to help lead Long Beach City College to a 42-13 non-league win over visiting Palomar College on Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
