Softball: Jacobo seventh-inning home run lifts Long Beach to 6-5 win at Citrus

Sophomore Mariah Jacobo (La Serna HS) smashed a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to lead the Long Beach City College Vikings to a 6-5 come-from-behind win at Citrus College on Friday night. The non-conference victory evened LBCC's record at 7-7.

Trailing 5-4 in the seventh, freshman Tristin Zazueta (Paramount HS) lined a two-out single off Citrus pitcher Makaele Moore to keep the Vikings' hope alive. Jacobo followed by smashing a 2-0 pitch over the fence to put Long Beach out in front for good.

Citrus (7-7) opened the scoring with three runs in the third, taking advantage of a Long Beach passed ball and error to score a pair of unearned runs off sophomore starting pitcher Brooke Loard (Millikan HS).

Long Beach got two runs back in the fourth when sophomore Brianna Alvarez (Montebello HS) drove in Zazueta and Corella with a single. And the Vikings took its first lead in the fifth after Corella drove in freshman Yulissa Dominguez (Santa Fe HS) with a RBI single and Alvarez beat out an infield single that scored freshman Daisy Velasquez (Bellflower HS).

The Owls answered with runs in the fifth and sixth to retake the lead before the Vikings' final comeback in the seventh.

Loard picked up the complete-game victory to improve to 3-4 overall. She allowed three earned runs and eight hits over seven innings. Loard Struck out four and walked six.

Corella went 3 for 4 with a RBI to lead Long Beach at the plate while Alvarez drove in three runs, going 2 for 4.

Long Beach returns to action on Tuesday (Mar. 1) when the Vikings open South Coast Conference play at home at 3 p.m. against Los Angeles Harbor College.
