Track & Field: Long Beach qualifies 11 for Friday’s SCC Championship Finals

Long Beach City College will advance 11 individuals along with four relay teams to Friday's South Coast Conference Championship Finals after qualifying at the SCC preliminaries on Tuesday at LBCC's Veterans Memorial Stadium. Seven members of the Long Beach women's squad will move on as well as four Viking men.

Sophomore Malika Spencer is a double qualifier for the LBCC women. She will compete in Friday's finals in both the 800 and 1500 meters. On Tuesday, she ran 2:27.00 in the 800 for the fifth fastest qualifying time and was seventh in the 1500 at 5:16.50.

LBCC will have two in the 100 meters final as Sherrice Pelle was sixth in qualifying at 12.56 and Breonna James finished eighth with a time of 12.99. Shavone Nora moves on in the 400 meters after running 1:01.06 for ninth while Asia Muldrow will join Spencer in the 1500 after she was 10th with a time of 5:19.92.

In throws, Marlene Contreras qualified for the discus final with a toss of 25.13 meters for 11th. Francine Contreras earned a seventh-place finish in the javelin final with her throw of 26.62 meters.

On the men's side, sophomore Phillip Powell had the Vikings' best finish on the track. He clocked in at 1:58.83 in the 800 meters for sixth to earn a spot In Friday's final.

Jarrod Amyx was also sixth to move on in the shot put. His throw of 12.35 meters also puts him in the final. Also, Aaron Ecsedy advanced in the discus with his throw of 38.35 meters for 10th and Damond Burns was 11th in the long jump at 6.16 meters to earn his spot in the finals.

LBCC men and women will also compete in both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays on Friday.

The Vikings look to qualify for the Southern California Championship preliminaries on May 7 at Antelope Valley College.
