Men's Basketball- Basketball Shares Conference Title With Win Over Rio Hondo


The Long Beach City College Vikings defeated the Rio Hondo College Roadrunners 89-73 on Monday evening in the Hall of Champions. With the win, the Vikings share the South Coast Conference South Division Crown with LA Harbor College and Cerritos College, all with a 7-3 record in the division.

Freshman forward Kameron Mayhan and sophomore guard Khieem Williams led the team with 20 points each, while Mayhan also tallied 13 rebounds for the double-double.

Freshman guard Jackson Wimberly also made a statement off the bench for the Vikings as he totaled 13 points against the Roadrunners. To round out the top finishes for the Vikings, freshman guard Lorenzo Marsh had 15 points, eight rebounds and five steals.

The Vikings went on to take down LA Trade-Tech and Pasadena later that week to finish regular season 17-11. Stay tuned to LBCCVikings.com for playoff updates.

Women's Basketball

No. 20 Women's basketball went 9-1 in the South Coast Conference South Division and shared a piece of the Conference Title with Cerritos College. This is the second consecutive conference title for the Vikings, eighth overall.

Softball- Long Beach Extends Winning-Streak with 3-2 Victory over El Camino

The No. 2 Long Beach City College softball team extended their winning-streak to five consecutive games with their 3-2 conference win over El Camino on Tuesday afternoon.

Sophomore pitcher Daisy Torres (7-2) was unstoppable in the dirt as she held the Warriors to only two runs on five hits, while striking down three in seven innings.

The Warriors had an RBI single in the top of the third and then hit an RBI double to score another and lead the Vikings 2-0.

Then the Vikings bounced back in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to right field from freshman catcher Jaylene Ross to only trail El Camino by one.

Still in the fourth, sophomore right fielder Noelany Benitez smashed a homer to center field for 2 RBI and take the 3-2 lead and the win for the Vikings.

Baseball- Baseball Takes Down El Camino 9-2

The Long Beach City College baseball team defeated the El Camino Warriors 9-2 for their second South Coast Conference matchup. With the win, the Vikings advance to 7-6 overall and are undefeated with a 2-0 record in conference play.

Freshman pitcher Moises Guzman (0-1) earned the win on the hill with only allowing the Warriors to one run, while striking out four in seven innings of work.

The Vikings came to bat with 2 RBI single in the bottom of the second from freshman third baseman Evan Vasquez to bring in freshman shortstop Alex Seguine, and freshman right fielder Raul Garcia to start their 2-0 lead over the Warriors.

In the fourth inning, Garcia doubled to center field to score in Guzman ad Seguine hit a sacrifice fly to score Garcia for the 4-0 lead.

The Warriors had a run in the top of the fifth, but the Vikings came back into action in the sixth inning with three runs from Seguine, Vazquez, and freshman first baseman Matthew Pinal.

The Warriors batted one in from and RBI double in the top of the eighth, but freshman center fielder Bryan Sanders ended the game with an RBI single to score in freshman catcher Malik Clayton to end the game with the 9-2 win.

The Vikings went on to defeat El Camino 16-10 for the final game of the series on last Saturday. The Vikings will play again on Tuesday, Mar. 1 at Mt.SAC at 2 p.m.

Beach Volleyball

The Long Beach City College Beach Volleyball team fell to Cypress College 4-1 last Friday at Belmont Shore, but then defeated Bakersfield College with a 5-0 sweep.

 

The Vikings will be back in action Friday, Mar. 4 against San Diego City College at home in the new beach volleyball courts at Long Beach City College.

Swim and Dive- Swim Competes in the Mt. SAC Swim and Dive Invitational

The Long Beach City College men's and women's swim and dive teams competed in the Mt.SAC invitational over the weekend. The men's team took eighth place out of 20 teams, while the women's team placed seventh overall out of 20.

Freshman Sydney Brouwer took the top spot on the podium for the 400 individual medley with a time of 5:10.67 and then also placed second in the 200 butterfly with a 2:27.80.

Fresham Atiya Yuwana also placed high for the Vikings with an second place finish in the 200 backstroke with a 2:22.92, and a third place showing in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:48.38.

For the men's team, freshman Mazen Abouelela took home third place in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:12.64. Freshman Nicolas Fedotov also swam the 200 backstroke and came in fourth with a 2:30.3.

Freshman diver Jakob Fransen had two-second place showings. In the one-meter dive, Fransen scored 217.05 points, and in the three-meter dive, he scored 172.95 points.The Vikings will be back in the pool on Friday, Mar. 4 against Cerritos and Chaffey at Long Beach City College at 10 a.m.

Track & Field- Track & Field Compete at the CSULA Invitational

The Long Beach City College track and field team competed at the CSULA Invitational over the weekend. 

The men's team saw top showings with the 4x100m relay team (DeAngelo Chester, Terrance Clay, Wesley Easter, Azjani McGill) earning first place with a State 'B' qualifying time 42.31. They are currently ranked fourth overall in the state.

Freshman sprinter Jonathan Perez-Cortez earned second place in the 800m, while lowering his personal best time to 1:57.49. He is currently ranked 7th in state.

The 4x400m relay team (Xavier Evans, Azjani McGill, Armando Padilla, Jonathan Perez-Cortez) ) showed a top showing once again with a second place podium finish with time of 3:25.61. The are currently ranked fourth in the state.

For the throwers, freshman Joseph Munoz earned second place in the shot sut with a personal best throw of 11.67 (38'3"), and following right behind him was freshman Tully Farmer in third place with with a throw of 11.26m (36'11").

Freshman jumper Wesley Easter earned fourth place overall in his long jump debut with a personal best jump 6.44m (21'1.5").

The women's  4x100m relay team (Destinee Reid, Desiree Hansford, Taryn Benton, Radiance Lindsey), who is ranked 5th in the state, took first overall with a State 'B' qualifying time 50.91.The 4x400m relay team (Natalie Mejia, Radiance Lindsey, Destinee Reid, Taj Grant), whis also ranked fifth in the state, placed second overall with a State 'B' qualifying time 4:11.45.

Freshman Natalie Mejia earned second place in the 800m race, while lowering her season best time to 2:26.63.

Freshman thrower and No. 4 ranked Casey Davis earned a fourth place showing shot put with a throw of 10.64m (34'11"). In addition, freshman thrower Serenity Lindemans took fourth in the discus with a season best throw of 29.71m (97'6").

The track and field team will be back in action on Friday, Mar. 4 at the Beach Opener at Long Beach State.

Men's Volleyball

The men's volleyball team defeated LA pierce with a 3-0 (25-6, 25-9, 25-13) sweep last Friday evening.

Freshman outside hitter Julian Zavala was the standout hitter as he scored 15.5 total points. He also tallied .550 in kill percentage against the Brahma Bulls.

Sophomore setter Joseph Rocha led the team with 16 assists and tallied three service aces for the Vikings.

The men's volleyball team will be back on the court on Wednesday, March 2 against Santa Barbara City College at 6 p.m.
