Ron Drake (Football/Baseball, 1964-65): Drake had an outstanding collegiate career in football and baseball at both Long Beach City College and USC. In 1965, he set the LBCC single-season record for receptions with 55 and career reception record with 100. Drake was twice named all-conference in football and earned All-American honors as a member of the 1964 Junior Rose Bowl/national championship team. Drake was an all-conference catcher in baseball in 1965 and was a first-round draft pick by the Kansas City Royals. He turned down the Royals to go to USC to play football and baseball. At USC, he set the Trojans’ single-season reception record with 52 catches in 1966. He was named first-team All-Pacific Eight Conference and All-Coast. Drake was a member of three national championship teams; LBCC football (1964), USC football (1967), and USC baseball (1968). Drake played three seasons (1969-71) in the minors in the San Diego Padres organization before taking his talents to coaching. As baseball head coach and football assistant coach at Mission Viejo High School, Drake’s teams have played for four CIF championships, winning football titles in 1978 and 1981.
