Gary "Jake" Jacobesen (Coach, 1965-2002): Jacobsen was a winner at coaching at every level. Every team that Jacobsen played on or coached from his senior year in high school to college was a conference champion. Jacobsen was brought to LBCC by former LBCC head coach Jim Stangeland in 1965. In football, Jacobsen was head coach for six seasons from 1960-65 and served as an assistant coach for 23 years. During that time, he helped lead LBCC to six conference championships, eight bowl games, one state title, and the 1995 national championship. He was also a standout men’s and women’s volleyball coach at LBCC. He coached eight of his 11 men’s volleyball teams to the state playoffs. Five of his teams reached the state championship match, with three teams winning California titles in 1980, 1982, and 1985. Jacobsen was named conference volleyball coach of the year six times as well as state volleyball coach of the year three times. From 1991-96, Jacobsen coached the USA-ASD girl’s volleyball team, a squad comprised of elite female players 19 years old and under, in competition in China, Japan, and Australia.
