Ernest S. McBride, Jr. (Football/Track and Field, 1957-61): McBride was a two-sport standout as a hurdler in track and as a split end and defensive back in football. As a freshman in 1957, McBride earned the second most dual points on LBCC’s Metropolitan Conference championship team. In 1961, he was named the college’s top athlete by The LBCC Collegian newspaper after setting LBCC and conference records in the shuttle hurdles and spring relay. Also that year, he placed sixth at the state championships in the 120-yard high hurdles. McBride was a member of LBCC’s 1960 Junior Rose Bowl and national championship squad. He closed the season second on the squad in receiving and fourth in scoring. McBride entered the U.S. Army following LBCC and played football, track, and softball at the White Sands Missile Range. After the Army, McBride was a two-year member of the Long Beach State football team in 1963 and 1964. After playing, McBride founded and coached the Long Beach Sprinter Youth Track and Field team (1982-2002). He also served as an assistant coach for Long Beach Poly High School’s girl’s track and field team from 1984-87.
