Cary Hardwick (Track and Field, 1979 & 1980): Hardwick was already a CIF champion in the 800 meters at Wilson High School before he came to LBCC and that proved to be his best event. In two seasons, Hardwick was named all-conference, All-Southern California, all-state, and helped lead LBCC to its first two state championships under head coach Ron Allice. As a freshman, he was a member of LBCC’s national record setting mile relay team. His sophomore season, he set the Metropolitan Conference record in the 800 meters and was second at the Southern California finals behind American record holder and four-time Olympian Johnny Gray. Following LBCC, Hardwick received a scholarship to compete on the track team at Indiana University. At Indiana in 1981, he was a member of the school record setting two-mile relay team. His senior season, he was a member of the mile relay team that took second place at the Big Ten Conference championships.
